Hi,
I have Macromedia Fireworks and am NOT a skilled user of it. I
have graphics in GIF format that I want in JPG in order to use
them inside my PDFs. Every time I try to export my GIF and
specify a JPG name, I cannot get it to save as a JPG. What am I
doing wrong? How do I use Fireworks to convert my graphics?
Thanks,
Kennon :)
Louis
Hello
Kennon
I don't have Fireworks myself so I couldn't offer any advice on that.
What I use for graphic conversions is Paint Shop Pro and that works
really well. You can get a fully functional demo here:

Ok,
your one file mentions about using PNG files as an option to
JPG. Hmmmm. I'm only familiar with these files because of using
Fireworks. I don't think I've ever seen them on web pages. Do
you know what the difference is and why they are not normally
on web pages?
Thanks,
Kennon :)

Actually, they could well be on web pages, since your browser handles
them automatically and you'd never know it.
PNG files are just another way of storing images. The problem with
GIF images is that the method used to store the image is patented
(although that patent will be expiring in the next 12 months). So
if you create a program that can manipulate GIF images, you need a
license (the developer of the program - not the user).
PNG was created in response to this problem - developers don't need
any sort of license to have their program use them. But they never
really took off as much as the creators were hoping it would.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Jason

That's
interesting. I appreciate you sharing that.
I guess I'll be trying a PNG before long.

Kennon;
In Fireworks (Depending on the version you use), you can export a
.PNG (Or any file FW can open) file to a .JPG by using the Export
Wizard that appears under the File menu. It will ask you a couple
of questions, including what you are outputting for. Choose "The
Web" or "Web Design Program" (It varies per version).
You will then be shown a preview of JPG and GIF files. Choose your
desired type, and choose "Export". It will then allow you
to save in the desired format. I've been using Fireworks since version
1.0 - if you need any tips, I'm happy to help!
PNG formats are not widely used (yet) because of file size and browser
compatibility. Personally, I prefer them to JPG or GIF.:D

I
wonder if I could talk to you on the phone sometime REAL soon.
I'd like to follow-up with you for just a few minutes on this and
some related ideas.
Thanks,
Kennon :)

Dave,
Glad we connected on the phone tonight. Since you'd spoken well
of the new product Louis has produced, I wondered if you'd
consider putting a testimonial over on that thread Louis started.
Maybe we can get an updated sales page sooner that way.
Kennon :)
