Hi,
I was wondering about the concept of having a free ebook, but charging
for the option of branding the links inside.
I've seen one or two marketers do that and was wondering what everyone's
thoughts are and if they think it's viable, what a reasonable price
would be for branding rights.
Thanks,
John

John,
I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Pricing will simply
require a bit of testing...
One thing you could do is set it up where the branding is for your
own affiliate program. You could sell it at an INTRODUCTORY price
of whatever it would take to get just one or two referral sales.
Then raise the price after a certain deadline.
Just my 2 cents...

I
think it will get distributed better if you charge for the ebook,
also. You charge a low price for the book plus unlimited resell rights,
and then you put links in the book for customizing it, for an additional
fee. I think this is a great way to do it.
When you look at these kind of things, it's good to think about what
your ultimate goal is. If you want as many people as possible to read
the ebook, because it promotes your site, some affiliates, and creates
credibility for you, than you need to figure out how to get as many
people as possible to read it.
Here's another angle. Say you have an affiliate program that you want
to promote. You could make ebooks that you give to your affliates
and let the brand for free. This would only be for affiliates that
sign up for your mailing list (for example with clickbank, you want
to have a list of people who are actively promoting your products).
Even though you give the ebook to your affiliates, you put a price
tag on it, and let them sell it. This adds value to your affiliates
and because of the amount of value, may make them promote your ebooks
more actively.
Free ebooks are fine, however I think it's harder to get someone to
read one. If it has a very unique and strong title, it can do OK,
but in general I think people collect them. My hard drive is getting
full :) I kind of feel like if an ebook is worth reading it's worth
$7-10 of my money. That said, I still may not pay that for it, but
if I do, I'll read it.

I
wonder... ebooks can be short sometimes... so short you could
consider them just to be an article or report. What do you guys
think about on this? Should the report be FREE and the branding
as well?
Kennon :)

Kennon,
I've been doing the free books and free branding for my downlines,
the problem is most don't do anything with it.
I also consider some of the free books I do as reports, but those
are also free to brand.
I know they get circulated, problem is some I created a while back
and the links are no longer valid.
So they're floating around but not doing me much good.

Hi
John,
I'm in the process of creating an ebook
about rebranding. Version 1 will contain
ebooks/reports/software/ecourses that
are easily rebranded for free. This will
build the initial list.
My follow up will be Version 2 which will
be about purchased rebranding which
will contain a limited number of ebooks/
reports/software/ecourses links.
One thing I'll have to consider is whether
to include only free-to-join-affiliate programs
and include a fee for rebranding
OR
add something like Host4Profit and include
free rebranding.
OR
sell it initially and include the whole
optional silver, gold and platinum rights...
gee...
Front-end vs. Back-end...
Would I want immediate income(one-shot deal),
long-term or somehow combine both...?
We all have to consider how the rebranding
is going to be done... allow people to plug in
their own redirect links or only insert their
affiliate numbers/id's?
You're right about the whole deadlinks.
An recent example would be Jason Potash's
EzineJVSecrets rebrandable pdf. One of the links
was no longer valid when John Barr's affiliate
management software had major problems
and he had to change his whole system for
"Home Business Mastery".
It took Jason a LONG time before releasing an
updated version so that rebranders could use
the right affliate link.
I'm assuming you are going to use a form or
link to one for people to receive 'future updates'
on the ebook.
As for price... would you be splitting the fee
allowing for commissions on rebranding?
I'm a little wary of the "rebrand for $67" and
hyping up the "earn a bunch from people who
also rebrand"
If you did increase the rebranding fee would
this automatically mean that those who do
rebrand are extremely motivated andwill go
out and distribute the ebook far and wide?
Benefit: More money for them and you.
If the fee was ~$17-27 making it more
palatable for the masses you would potentially
have many more active distributors.
Benefit: More money for them and you.
Guess it would take some testing to figure it
all out...

Yoon,
The price would only be the $17 or $27. It's not about making big
money from it. It's to pay for my time spent on it and more and more
lately increased aggravation.
I've been giving brandable books away for years and most of the users
aren't in my affiliate program or downline.
So I do the work, don't capture addresses and get all the flack.
The increase in flack is the reason for pricing the branding.
If they don't read the read me file they start sending me nasty emails.
I just got an email yesterday from a woman mad the way she had to
access the books.
She didn't like the fact that clicking the link to get the addresses
for the brandable books activated Outlook.
She said she was already fed up with me for that and then proceeded
with a full rant.
An excellent thank you from someone in someone elses downline, getting
6 free brandable book to build hers.
So if I'm going to do the work and take the flack, I might as well
get something from it.

As a lot of free eBooks have a customisation option, perhaps the following
might be helpful in helping you stand out.
Perhaps what you can do is say:
"Customising this eBook costs $29.95 - however for the first
100 ONLY you can customise it for only $9.95"
And make sure that offer is clear and that they realise there's genuine
urgency to the offer rather than purely a sales ploy.
Or perhaps you could say "The first 100 are $1 and then after
that it's $9.95"
This will give you $100 immediately and since it's such a strong offer
it will jump start the eBook spreading since you'll very quickly have
100 customised copies out there. And of course customised eBooks are
much more likely to be passed on.
Or you could perhaps even offer a sliding scale:
First 20 - $1 each
Next 20 - $2.95 each
Next 20 - $4.95 each
Next 20 - $7.95 each
Next 20 - $9.95 each
...etc...
This could perhaps add up pretty quickly, and will again help build
a sense of urgency so people are more likely to buy.
Just some thoughts. :)

Louis,
Excellent suggestion.
I think that's the way to go.
