Just
wondering if you guys (girls) could answer a couple of questions about
affililate scripts.
My first questions is should i run my own or use a third party. I
have been designing websites for many years and have no problem installing
one myself but not sure which is the best route.
Also what script would you recommend to use?
Anyone with any experience with affiliates scripts good or bad would
help.
Also if your pages are in .php will the se's treat them the same as
if they were .html or shtml ....
thanks alot

My
recommendation would be towards scripts installed on your servers.
My reasoning for this is that the more third party services you depend
on, the more something can go wrong.
I used to use Marketers Choice (http://www.marketerschoice.com) for
an affiliate program - that cost me $80 a month, but I was always
depending on their servers being up, and buying a script and installing
it on my server would actually work out cheaper.
That said, for my recurring affiliate program (http://www.reprintrightseverymonth.com)
it was proving difficult to integrate an affiliate script successfully
with recurring billing for both PayPal & WorldPay - the custom
coding could have been $1,000+
So in that case I went with:
http://www.affiliatetracking.com
It cost me $75 to add each payment processor (so $150 total) and then
it costs me $40 a month. Any month that gets over 10,000 clicks adds
to the cost.
It's proven a pretty good service, and the decision to go with it
was because of the open-ended programming costs, BUT - for all affiliate
programs in the future I plan to use:
http://www.groundbreak.com
It's around $200 which is reasonable.
One thing to bear in mind with installing an affiliate script is that
when you start really getting decent traffic, be sure your hosting
can handle it.
Since scripts can use the CPU of your server quite heavily, you may
need a dedicated server - but when you're getting that level of traffic
the revenue the affiliate program is bringing in should easily justify
these higher costs.
For example as this forum got busier I had to upgrade to a dedicated
server to support it since before then we often got "Too many
connections" errors.
I'm happy to say I got a good deal and it's fully managed so I don't
have to worry about installing patches, managing security...etc.

anybody
else with a comment about this.
I am still not sure, i see the advantages of running your own but
also with the third party.
I am concerned (were i am new) that i would be losing traffic that
i might get if i used clickbank.
Do you people that use clickbank find that alot of your affilates
come from clickbank?
thanks
