How does yahoo profit from something like a toolbar that uses the yahoo search algorithms? I mean, I know they must pay for it...but do they get money every time someone uses it? That seems a little ridiculous. I downloaded this toolbar ( http://www.viewpoint.com/pub/downloads/search_toolbar.html )that's designed for a particular product, kind of a neat idea, I guess, and I was wondering. Any of you guys know?

Hi ,

I'm not sure about this, but it could be that Yahoo has partnerships with certain companies to advertise through
the toolbar.

Also, if people were to use the toolbar actively to search
for things, Yahoo's PPC(Overture) could add up to massive additional revenues.

Plus, Yahoo could always track to see what people are
searching for, websites visited, etc. Sort of a demographics
surfing tool...?

I have friends who have their own toolbars that they offer
visitors for download. When the visitor downloads and
installs these toolbars my friends benefit because the
drop-down menu within the tool bars have favorite
sites or affiliate programs that they hope to direct traffic
to. On top of that, it's a form of branding.
